Title: Tomb Raider Build
Post by: Uncle Jeremy on July 11, 2008, 10:40:14 AM
Started with a Stock Jeep Rubicon Tomb Raider Edition.
---The Tomb Raider Edition is a Limited Edition Jeep and only 1,001 of them were produced.  They feature all of the great components of a Standard Rubicon with the addition of 16" Alcoa Forged Aluminum Wheels, Tomb Raider Badging, Mopar Performance Light bar, Tubular Grill guard w/ diamond plate skid, Bushwacker style pocket flares.  On the insided they have Dark Slate seats, with red accents, silver dash board accents, red seatbelts, and of course the Tomb Raider Badge w/serial number.

Here is a list of what we did to "Moabify" the Tomb Raider:
--  We pulled the stock 4.10 ring and pinions out and replaced it with a 4.88 Yukon gear ring and pinions.  To Protect the Investment into gears we installed Fab Fours Heavy Duty Diff Guards with Lube Locker Gaskets Front and Rear.
--  We then added a 5.5" Rubicon Express Extreme Duty Long Arm Suspension to give it a litte better ground clearance and some more articulation.
--  To Better Equip the Jeep for Offroad, we installed a FabFours LifeStyle Front bumper with a grill guard to protect the ever handy Warn Power Plant HP9500- This winch is a great addition for those that drive to and from the trail, it allows the user to air up tires, run air tools, and do strong recovery duty.  Because this Jeep is now so stout and has larger tires we knew the customer may have to recover those trying to follow his lead so to aid in this we installed a Fab Fours Rear Bumper and Tire Carrier, the bumper is equipped with a Swing out tire carrier, 2 D-Ring tabs, and a 2" reciver.  To Complete the recovery/protection package we installed Fab Fours Rocker guards and we custom built a Locker Solenoid Skidplate.
--  For Power to the ground we installed 5 BFG KM2 35x12.50R17's we wraped them around a newer design Procomp Wheel with chrome powder coat, for a great shine with endurance of a powder coat.
--  For quicker more accuarate throttle response we installed a AEM BruteForce intake along with a PowerAid Throttle Body spacer.  For suspension clearance and some good engine tone we installed a Magnaflow Muffler and custom Tail Pipe.

All in all this a bitchin' Jeep, it turned out great with good looks and great performance.

Thanks to all the guys at Moab who worked on turning this into my dream Jeep ;D

As Jeremy stated, this vehicle started with a lot of great stuff like the front and rear Dana 44s with lockers, light bar, special seates, etc...  With a little imagination from Maob, my Jeep is now "Jacked Up" with a Rubicon Express 5.5" Long Arm with 35" BFGs on 17x9 ProComp Knight Powdered Wheels.  Max and Jeremy could have hosted a little reality TV show of their own, just like "Pimp my Ride" or "Trick my Truck" and called it "Jack my Jeep"!  Just think about how that would play out with the guys in the shop putting their heads together :o    Suspension...  Wheels...  Engine...  This truly is an eye catching, head turning ride that has a throaty exhaust that gets your heart racing.

Unlike the TV show, it all had to come from my pocket but worth every penny!!!  Already saving for more adds.  Any ideas (roll cage, auxilary lights, etc...):-\

See you on the trails :D

HA !  JACK MY JeeP !  I love it.

Pimp azz ride Kat.

IF you're gonna wheel it,,,put in a cage. That is #1 important for numerous reasons.

1. Driver/Passenger safety
2. Helps to strengthen frame/body from twisting when flexed to the moon.
3. Gives you a place to mount a Power Tank as well as let any Trail Monkeys swing.

Hope to see you on the trails. Hurry and get signed up for the French Lick JeeP Jamboree and you can run with me and Max. We have a great time and always bring em back alive.  ;D

Bill, (KAT)
The roll cage is a great idea to protect your investments; family, parts and goodies.

Here are some pictures of Bill's first outing with this jeep.

Took the family to the Jeep Jamboree - Gateway to the Cumberlands and had a great time ;D  Went on the two toughest trails that they had to offer but the second day on Thuder road was by-far the more challenging.  Max was a great spotter can you find him in the pictures ???

Several Pictures:

Now planning for another phase of my Jeep build for early Spring. :o

Though I've had a great time with the set-up of the Jeep  ;D, it is time to move on to the next level.  The next build phase will be started in January.

Since I've ripped both rear fender Bushwackers (Thanks Max with the spot ;) lol) it is time to go to tube fenders and corner protection (GenRight style).  However, the protection won't stop there, since as Smokey recommended a cage is #1 for safety of the little wheelers'.  While I'm at it, it is a good time to stretch the wheel base and modify the suspension for more articulation.

I'm sure Jeremy will keep us all updated with photos of the build, like last time (Thanks Jeremy :)).  The hardest part for me will be the wait... :'(

BTW my son wants to theme the Jeep "Ghost Rider" with flames and a skull on the hood :-\.   Guess I should thank the "Punisher" for that :P  If anyone else has ideas let me know.

Well you know I didn't like those 6" flares anyways since they were getting in the way.  Thanks Max for your help to justify doing something different.  Decided on the 3", so I have more clearance and a little something to stop some of the mud from slinging. ;D

Almost forgot :o, going to do coilovers all the way around to help with the stretch.  Giving Jeremy and Max some creative freedom with this Phase 2 Build. :P :D

Just let me know when you want it dropped off, BIG BOY ;D :D ;D

Just to update everyone else.  I visited the shop last week since my Build Plans were not quite finalized.  After seeing some very impressive Jeeps on the trail and in the shop (Ben's and Jeremy's) my initial plan was modified.  As noted previously, I was leaving some creative freedom to Jeremy and Max.  Not everyone was included for suggestions, like Max's post, since I would have to then sell the house for the build and live in the Jeep.

So what is the Tomb Raider's next phase going to be ??? ??? ???

Here is a list of new components:
  • Hi-Line Gen-Right front and rear coners/fender to accomidate a stretch
  • AEV Hi-Line Hood
  • RockJock 60s Front and Rear, 5.38 R&P with ARB Lockers
  • Sway-Away Coilovers all the way around
  • Walker Evans Beadlocks
  • 40" ProComp Tires
  • Hydraulic Assist
  • Rollcage
  • Antirocks
  • And finally, some Custom Paint to theme it, for my son of course ;)

Well, I think that about covers it...

Your right Smokey but you have to love technology ;D  I wanted to stretch for stability and then coilovers came into play.  My son wanted Bigger tires, hence the 40".  Then needed to beef up the axles...  You get the picture.

So who's interested in the old parts ???

For anyone who is wondering, the build should start soon, remember this will be a rather large build (at least for me).  We have been waiting for several parts to come in to get started.  I am very excited about this transformation for my Jeep and will be out on the trail as soon as the build is complete.  ;D  This is not intended to be a mall crawler.  As I have wheeled with some of you already and plan on doing much more this year.

Again, all of the parts coming off will be available if you are interested, see Jeremy. ;)

You can see the GEN-RIGHT rocker guards in this pic for mock-up however won't be installed until the wheel base is determined with the rear suspension upgrade. ;D ;D

here's the driver side.

in this pic you can see the amount of wheelbase stretch the corner guards offer.

now the interior is getting removed for the install of the GEN-RIGHT   cage kit...

I am thinking to buy a set of the KM2s.  How did they do on the local trails here?  I have been running TSL Radials for the past 5 years and love them but it is time for a change.

Let me know.

I really liked them.  They were sticky on the rock and did a good job self cleaning in the mud.  Realatively quiet too on the street.  What size do you need?  My old 35x17 are for sale since I'm going to a 40".

Hey Bill, Brian at Currie....Ran tracking on your frontend this morning, it will be dropped off at Max's place some time today. We actually used it for our studio shots for our website before it shipped out. I hope you enjoy the product, it's a great new system:

And also, new in the line as of the last 3 weeks, is the F9 Fabricated style 9" front end for TJ's. Completely bolt-in and available with either the 1 ton outers, or to retain stock outers.

The cage went out today to be painted the dark charcoal metallic like the old fender flares and the light bar.  The hood and front fenders also went to be patch painted.  The flames will be added during the final paint process.  However, it is starting to come together.  Suspension work to be started next week now that the axles and coilovers are at the shop.  Cannot wait!!! :P

Failed to mention, I'm switching to the Gen-Right Stubby bumper with stinger and grille hoop.  This too will be painted the dark charcoal to match.  So if anyone is interested in buying my FabFour front bumper let me know.  It will be added to the list of other goodies with little wear and tear.

I feel like I'm in a dream and cannot believe that is my Jeep :o  It won't seem real until I see it finished in person and can drive it.  Again, thanks to all who have or are contributing to the build design.  I know there has been a lot of careful thought and planning to make this happen.   ;)  Should be a great Fathers' Day this year to take the kiddos out in this beast.  (I told them I wanted a skull shifter knob to go in the jeep; let's see if they get the hint). ;)

Thanks again :D

The rear coil-overs brackets were mocked, cut and tacked in place this weekend.  We were going to position the rear bump stop holders but could find them.  They were under the front driver's seat.  None of us thought to open the door to look at under the seat.  :P

We looked everywhere else...

No problem.  I usually stuff things under there all the time but didn't even cross my mind, when there was an entire shelf with my parts ??? ::)

Oh well, I'm sure those will be mounted soon so the axle can be fully welded and built ;D

you can see in this pic that these wheels use a "steel" threaded insert to hold the ring on and the back side of the ring is knurled to prevent the tire bead from slipping.   ;D the fit and finish of these wheels are PURDY!!!

okay I'm getting back to work.  ;)

Me too!!!  Very excited about how it is coming together and what the look will be once finished.  I know Max, Lucas and Doug are all paying attention to the details which show in the cutting, grinding and welding of the various parts.  The fit and finish will be great; along with a custom paint job - GHOST RIDER!!!

We actually didn't do the conversion this time, we took the easy way out and sent it to Burnsville! We've done GM and Jeep engine conversions here before, but we'd talked to Burnsville at Moab about doing this one and ended up shipping it to them. It is AMAZING how nice of a job they do. It looks SO factory it really is unbelievable. All the gauges work, cruise control - everything. They installed the hood, and painted the scallops and flares for us too while it was there. It was a great experience doing business with them. Highly recommended!

Okay some of what you've all been waiting for.  I have been extremely behind on this project being a man short at the shop and having to do sales recently (thanks for all the patience Bill). ;)  However we're starting to get this project wrapped up and only have 2 WEEKS to get it done!!!!!!  AKKKK!!!  lol.  I should be getting the rockers and corner guards back tonight or tomorrow morning.  We went with some longer Poly Performance air bump cans for a cleaner look and better fitment with the rear Anti-rock sway bar (those just showed up yesterday).  8)  We also got the Alum. links in from BRANIK MACHINE.   :o :o :o  Enough talk on to the pics.

Man, even the engine has a roll bar.  Haha.  Coil over stuff looks cool.  Just remember you're going to have to cut all of that back out when Bill decides to change to some 2.5 ton Rockwell's and a Hemi in it in about 9 months.  ;D

okay, here's a few more.....

I test fitted the rear flares today while cycling the rear suspension.  ;)  I also got some Bushwacker fender flare rubber gaskets to use in between the flare and the corner guard so the paint dosen't get chipped.  I think it turned out great and the painter did a great job!!!

We also mounted the spare tire and the license plate bracket.

Questions:

1. What would we do, humanity as a whole, without jack stands?

2. Are those EXTERNAL locking hub assemblies on the front axles?  (If so, it's a lost art and I think it's rad that someone is still willing to actually get out of the jeep.)

3. Is Lucas still pouting that you used the Curry 60's instead of a couple of 14 bolts?

4. Why is it that nothing ever seems to get done until Pockets shows up at the shop?

5. And isn't the mounting of the spare tire already putting the cart before the horse? The friggin' thing doesn't have a functional suspension yet!

Looks fantastic.  You fellas do outstanding work!

If you get rock rash or tree rub on this thing, I'm going to cry! ;)

well here are some pics from the weekend...  8)

got a few things in paint.

Then for clearance issues on the CURRIE rear sway bar we used regular heim joints instead of the ones offered w/ the bar.  That allowed us to counter sink the holes in the sway bar for flush mounted bolts and drop the heim joint under the arm.  Now the bar won't contact the inside of the tire.   8)

here's what I started with.  A bunch of bolts for mock up.

then counter sunk the holes.

made a bracket for the heim to attach to.

I'll have more tomorrow with the rear suspension together!!!    :o

whew......  3 days is making my dreads fall out!!   :o :o   ;D

here's some teaser pics from tonight.

made some changes to the steering arm so that we could get full steering with out binding in the tie rod ends.  We also used the GEN-RIGHT "twisted pitman arm"

we also made the rear swaybar links and installed the new e-brake cables.

that's all for now.   ;)

My mom always freaked out, but they still have the hair in my baby book!  ;D  I'd consider doing that for Max.... I definitely have enough for the both of us. Anywho... I took those pics of Max! Smokey, Unfortunately I won't make if down for a Wild Turkey Wednesday.  Limited on only having one vehicle to drive  :P  But once the Ghost Rider is finished then I could definitely make it down  ;D

However, once this project is finished.  I do have a little liquid surprise for the guys  ;)  We will have to do some toasts to all the great work and hope you and others will be able to join in. We can all marvel at the craftsmanship and engineering that went into this build.  As well as bitch about all the little unknowns that happened along the way.

I'll let Max set the date and time; since it is ALL in his hands :)

You can't rush perfection.
And seriously, You are going to have one of the sickest Jeeps to come out of Moab!!!
I've been there for most of the build, when they cycled the suspension, mounted tires, the cage, everything.
This Jeep is going to be truly amazing!!

Great job Moab guys!!!

I agree it is going to be SICK!  ;D  I simply asked for more pictures to follow the progress.  I've been patient just extremely excited!!!  Can you blame me???  You think you are excited seeing it @ the shop, that is why I want the pictures.  I'm not there daily, weekly or even monthly.  This thread is my only connection.  Love all the precision work that has been done so far; simply anxious :P

as promised.....  The Swaybar arms were hitting the Fenders so a lil trimming was done and the arms were bent to help clear.  Now the ghostrider's flex clears everything.

then the swaybar axle brackets were made...

Then everything tacked in place and cycled again for the 500th time lol.  :P

WOW that thing looks great Max.  :o  ;D

Well, I picked up my jeep on Saturday  ;D  It is incredible...  Words just cannot describe the look, the feel and the capability that this has built into it.

Just to summarize my trip to the 'Ville.  Took jeep down Bardstown Rd about 7ish so it was slow go and a lot of foot traffic had already started down the street.  People, both men and women were just entranced as this cruzed down the road  ;D  There was even some hootin' and hollerin' (I felt like a sexy women walking infront of a construction site  ;)).  Later I picked up Max and Pockets to go out on the town for some entertainment.  We stopped off at a local watering hole and decided to go back outside for some fresh air, only to find a group of 10-12 people standing around it, pointing and paying compliments  ;)  So I did what any one of you would and went up to it, opening the door and handed out some of Max's Business cards and pointed to the man who designed and built this beast.  Informing them that it is going to Moab for the Easter Jeep Safari next week.  Yes, I intend to wheel this  8)  No MALL CRAWL here >:(

Will make sure to load pixs from the trip to the site for you all to enjoy as well.

GREAT JOB MAX and everyone else who put some time in on this rig to make my dream jeep  ;D :D ;) :) ;) :D ;D 8)

Thanks Bill I'm glad you like it.  It was a long build considering the circumstances and I couldn't have done it with out Lucas, Doug, Deeeewaine, Jeff (pinky) and Ben.  Not to mention Bill's understanding and patience and Kelly's support!  For those that don't know, I've been answering the phone and working in the showroom since April '09 and building this Jeep in my spare time after hours and every Sunday.  With that said.......   WHEW I'M TIRED AND GLAD ITS DONE.  ;)  LOL!  Thanks to Bill, I was able to explore my creative side on this build.  This TJ has about 3.5" of lift and 3" of extra tire clearance due to the Gen-Right products.  The 14" Sway-a-Way coilovers have 6" of vertical uptravel from ride height and that leaves about 1/2" of tire clearance to the fenders.  THIS JEEP IS A HARDCORE DAILY DRIVER!!!!!!  Bill drove this home on the Hwy for about a 1.5 hrs with no problems.  I think that is a very cool thing.  This Jeep isn't a trailer queen, it's a great return on investment.

Here are a couple of pics I took the other day.  Hope you like them.

Oh, and it's going to be awesome when I have to pull Bill out of somewhere using his OLD axles.  Ha!
